Ticket discounts and special groups

Children, students, pensioners, conscripts and persons undergoing non-military service get a discount on train tickets. Groups with more than 18 persons can ask for a discount from our Group Sales.

Please take the document entitling you to a discount with you when you travel by train. You will need it to prove your right to a discount at ticket inspection.

Persons travelling for free

A ticket is not required in all cases

The following persons may travel for free on our trains

  • Children under 4 travelling with an adult and without a designated seat in long-distance traffic
  • Children under 11 travelling with an adult in a sleeper car without a designated berth (a free ticket must be obtained for a child between the ages of 4-11 from the ticket sale of service stations or by phone through customer service)
  • Children under 7 in VR’s commuter traffic
  • Persons travelling with a child under 7 in a pushchair or pram in VR’s commuter traffic
  • Children under 12 on an Interrail with a paying adult (two children for free per one adult)
  • Assistants of disabled passengers (an assistant’s ticket is required in long-distance traffic)
  • Conscripts under certain terms in accordance with the agreement and operating model agreed between VR and the Finnish Defence Forces
  • Persons undergoing non-military service under certain terms in accordance with the agreement and operating model agreed between VR and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment
