17-year-olds travel on a child’s ticket on VR trains

VR will extend the children’s discount to 17-year-olds in both long-distance and commuter traffic. Starting from 1 September 2022, 17-year-olds can travel by train at a lower price.

The children’s discount will be applicable to single tickets, multi-tickets and season tickets in VR’s long-distance and commuter traffic.

Up to now, the age limit for the discount has been 4–16 years in long-distance traffic and 7–16 years in commuter traffic. Starting from 1 September 2022, the age limit for the child’s ticket will be 4–17 years in long-distance traffic and 7–17 years in commuter traffic.

Students aged 17 will travel at a lower price in long-distance traffic because the 40-per-cent children’s discount in long-distance traffic is higher than the student discount. In commuter traffic, the discount rate for children’s tickets and student tickets is the same, 50 per cent.

The change in the age limit will help 17-year-olds who are subject to extended compulsory education and who will receive the discount directly on the basis of their age without needing to present student ID.

17-year-olds will receive the children’s discount on train tickets starting from 1 September 2022. Single and multi-tickets can also be purchased with the children’s discount in advance for journeys that take place on or after 1 September 2022.
