Train traffic during Christmas and New Year

We will take you safely to your destination also during Christmas, New Year and Epiphany, but the timetables are a little different than usual.

This is how we operate during the holidays. You can find more detailed information always in the trip search.

Long-distance traffic

  • On the day before Christmas Eve, 23 December, trains will run according to the Friday timetables.
  • On Christmas Eve morning, 24 December, trains will run according to the Saturday timetables. During the afternoon, traffic is reduced and all traffic will stop at about 6 p.m. No night trains will leave on Christmas Eve, 24 December.
  • On Christmas Day, 25 December, less frequent traffic Sunday traffic. Traffic will start gradually around 8 a.m.
  • On Boxing Day, 26 December, trains will run mainly according to the Sunday timetables with some exceptions.
  • On New Year's Eve, 31 December, trains will run according to Friday timetables with some exceptions.
  • On New Year's Day, 1 January, trains will run according to Sunday timetables with some exceptions.
  • On Epiphany, 6 January, trains will run according to Sunday timetables with some exceptions.
  • During Christmas and New Year, there will be additional services on night trains on routes Helsinki–Kolari and Helsinki–Rovaniemi. They operate from 16 December 2021 to 6 January 2022 with an additional departure on both routes approximately every other day per direction. In addition to these, regular night trains run daily on all routes Helsinki–Kemijärvi, Helsinki–Rovaniemi and Helsinki–Kolari. You can find the night train timetables here.

VR Commuter traffic

  • On Christmas Eve, 24 December, trains will run according to the Sunday timetables. Traffic is reduced from 4 p.m. after which R and Z trains will run only once every second hour and only some of the trains to Tampere will operated. G train will stop operating at 5 p.m.
  • On Christmas Day, 25 December, some T trains will run from early morning. Traffic will start after about 9–11 a.m. After that, all lines will run according to normal Sunday timetables.
  • On Boxing Day, 26 December, trains will run according to the Sunday timetables.

  • On New Year's Eve, 31 December, trains will run according to Friday timetables.
  • On New Year's Day, 1 January, trains will run according to Sunday timetables.

  • On the day before Epiphany, 5 January, trains will run according to Friday timetables.
  • On Epiphany, 6 January, trains will run according to Sunday timetables.
