We are increasing discounts for students and pensioners on less busy train departures
We are renewing our discounts for students and pensioners on long-distance services. In the future, customers will be able to travel even more affordably on less busy departures. The aim is to offer customers more affordable travel options and encourage even more people to choose rail travel.
Our standard discount is 30% for students and 20% for pensioners. Going forward, student discounts on less busy departures may be as high as 40%, while pensioners may receive up to 30% off the ticket price. Discounts on other departures will remain unchanged. The prices apply to single tickets on long-distance services. Eligible departures are marked with the "Extra %" label in the VR Matkalla app and on vr.fi.
At the same time, discounts for conscripts completing their military service will be revised. In the future, conscripts will also be able to travel on leisure journeys on less busy departures with a 40% discount, matching the discount available to students.
The new discounts will take effect on journeys from 1 October 2026. Tickets will be available for purchase through all VR sales channels from 17 September.
