We are introducing a new method of ticket inspection in long-distance traffic

We are gradually revising our ticket inspection practices. Starting from 28 August, our customers can inspect their own tickets in the VR Matkalla app. At this stage, the change concerns Ekstra Class seats and day train compartments. If the passenger activates the ticket in the app, the conductor will no longer individually inspect the ticket.

Ticket activation is another alternative alongside conventional ticket inspection and applies to tickets for both adults and children. For the time being, the conductor will normally inspect other discount tickets and the certificates of discount entitling to buy them also from passengers travelling in the Ekstra Class and compartments.

Ticket activation opens in the app 15 minutes before the train departure time and closes 10 minutes after the train departure time. If the journey includes a transfer, the ticket for the latter train must also be activated separately when changing trains. Conductors can see the tickets already activated on their devices and manually check the tickets of passengers who have not activated their ticket in the app. If necessary, they have the right to ask the passenger to also present the activated ticket to the conductor.

We will gradually expand ticket activation to all train tickets. However, we first want to collect feedback from our customers and staff concerning ticket activation.

“This service is based on the wishes of our customers and its purpose is to offer the customer a journey with minimum interruptions. When you can activate the ticket yourself, you can immediately start a remote meeting at the departure platform or close your eyes and take a nap. Conductors will continue to tour the cars in the normal way, so they are available and happy to help if the customer has any questions regarding the journey,” says Piia Tyynilä, Senior Vice President Long Distance Trains.
