A political strike threatens to stop train traffic on Thursday 14 December

A strike threatens to stop train traffic on Thursday 14 December, with the exception of night trains – tickets can be changed to another time or VR will refund tickets purchased for the strike day.

The planned political strike would halt train traffic on Thursday 14 December, with the exception of night trains. If the strike takes place, all long-distance and commuter train services will be cancelled. Long-distance single tickets can be changed to another time without a change fee. If the customer does not change their ticket to another time, VR will automatically refund any train tickets purchased for the strike day.

The strike is planned to start on Thursday 14 December 2023 at 00:01 and continue until the end of the same day at 23:59. All night trains would run normally despite the strike.

Tickets can be changed to another time or VR will automatically refund any tickets purchased for the strike day

Customers can change their long-distance single tickets to another time without a change fee from Tuesday 12 December at 9 a.m. until Thursday 14 December at 9 a.m. You can make the change yourself via the VR Matkalla app, online at vr.fi or through our customer service by calling 0100 3232. We recommend that our customersuse the app or vr.fi to change the ticket. Any ticket changes must be made before the scheduled departure of the train. Ticket changes normally cost EUR 5.

Should the strike take place, VR will automatically refund the price of single tickets purchased for long-distance and commuter traffic for the strike day within about a week. VR will also reimburse customers for the reservation of seats for multi-tickets and extend the validity of season tickets for long-distance and commuter traffic by one day. The validity period of multi-tickets purchased while logged in will also be extended by one day. These do not require any action from the users of the tickets.

If the train tickets have been purchased as paper tickets without logging in from a ticket vending machine or R-kioski, for example, the compensation cannot be paid automatically. In that case, you can apply for compensation for the tickets.

Aim to return to normal traffic on Friday

VR aims to operate as normally as possible on Friday according to timetables. After the strike has ended, train traffic may still be subject to individual changes on the next day due to exceptional arrangements related to the start of the service. You can check the status of your own long-distance service in the trip search at vr.fi. For other exceptions, you can find up-to-date information on
