Impacts of the Espoo Rail Line project on train traffic

Changes between Helsinki and Turku

The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency’s Espoo Rail Line project will cause changes in train traffic between Helsinki and Turku, starting from May 2026. From Monday, 22 June to Sunday, 26 July 2026, there will be a traffic interruption between Helsinki and Karjaa. Trains between Karjaa and Turku will run at longer intervals.

We will replace long-distance trains with buses between Helsinki and Kirkkonummi on May 3, May 14, May 17 and May 24 Trains operate between Kirkkonummi and Turku.

Connections between Helsinki Central Railway Station and Turku

From Monday, 22 June to Sunday, 26 July, train traffic between Helsinki Central Railway Station and Karjaa will be at a complete standstill. During the traffic interruption, we will operate traffic between Helsinki and Turku in three different ways.

Operates in both directions Helsinki Central Railway Station–Salo (Piihovi)–Kupittaa–Turku. The Port of Turku is also accessible at the ships' travel times.

Track work bus B04 and long-distance train

Track work bus B04 operates in both directions Helsinki Central Railway Station–Kirkkonummi–Karjaa. From Karjaa, a connection to the Hanko H commuter train or Turku long-distance train. A long-distance train connection to the Port of Turku is also available at the ships' travel times.

Track work bus B02

The stops of the track work bus B02, which travels through the minor stations, are: Helsinki Central Railway Station, Leppävaara, Salo, Kupittaa and Turku. The Port of Turku is also accessible at the ships' travel times.

If your trip includes a track work bus, the line ID of the track work bus can always be found on your ticket.

Replacement buses for HSL trains

If your ticket shows a bus number between 08300–08599, 18300–18599, or 28300–28599, followed by BU, BL or BE, it refers to an HSL bus. The departure locations for HSL buses differ from those of VR buses. Please check the departure location for the HSL bus. , Opens in a new tab

Service disruptions in the summer

On July 27 some trains will be replaced by buses between Helsinki and Turku, and those trains will not operate from Karjaa to Turku.

Train services in the Port of Turku

During the traffic interruption, we will run the following daily train services between the Port of Turku and Karjaa:

  • Karjaa–Port of Turku 4:39–5:49 p.m.
  • Karjaa–Port of Turku 6:39–7:49 p.m.
  • Port of Turku–Karjaa 8:05–9:27 a.m.
  • Port of Turku–Karjaa 8.30–9.57 p.m.

Train from Riihimäki to Hanko

You can travel from Riihimäki to Hanko everyday on the H commuter train, as the H train will change its route during the track work. Service will begin on June 22. The service between Hanko and Riihimäki will end on July 26.

Exceptional autumn arrangements

In autumn 2026, due to track work, we will replace all long-distance trains with buses between Helsinki and Kirkkonummi on September 5-6, September 13, September 19-20, September 27, and October 3-4. The departure locations of the buses are the same as during the summer traffic interruption.

Tips for a smooth train trip

Track work buses will also bring some changes to travelling that may raise questions. Could the following points provide answers to your questions?

First a ticket, then to the bus

Tickets are not sold on the track work buses. You can buy a ticket for the track work bus most easily at vr.fi, through the VR Matkalla app, or from a ticket vending machine. Track work bus tickets are also sold at R kiosks, at our service point in Helsinki and by calling our customer service.
