Train to Haparanda
Soon you can travel to Sweden by train
Long-distance train services to Haparanda will begin this autumn. A total of 30 trains per week will run between Oulu and Haparanda, with connections to long-distance trains heading toward Helsinki. The connection to Sweden also makes it possible to travel overland to other parts of Europe.
Important information for passengers travelling on cross-border routes
Please note that it is the passenger's responsibility to familiarise themselves with the destination country's border crossing requirements and to ensure they carry all necessary travel documents.
VR follows the instructions and regulations issued by the relevant authorities for cross-border services. It is the passenger's responsibility to ensure they have a valid travel document.
Customs and Border Guard personnel have the right to board trains to inspect passengers' travel documents. Passengers must be able to prove their identity and right to travel when requested.
Finland and Sweden are both part of the Schengen Area, which means there are generally no routine passport checks between the two countries. However, passengers must carry a valid travel document, such as a passport or a photographic identity card.

Minors Traveling Alone
If a minor is traveling without a guardian, it is recommended that, in addition to a travel document, they carry a consent form prepared by a guardian.
When travelling by train with a pet across the border between Finland and Sweden, it is your responsibility to comply with all applicable border crossing regulations and customs requirements. These regulations are designed to prevent the spread of infectious diseases and may vary depending on the destination country.
When travelling to Sweden
The import of dogs and cats must always be declared to Swedish Customs, and pets must meet specific import requirements.
Pets travelling to Sweden must have a pet passport and be identified with either a unique microchip or a tattoo. They must also be vaccinated against rabies.

When travelling to Finland
Pets entering Finland must have a pet passport and be identified with either a unique microchip or a tattoo.
Pets must be vaccinated against rabies. In addition, dogs must have received treatment against echinococcosis.

Other things to note regarding Haparanda traffic
Train services running between Oulu and Haaparanta have some special features
Train restaurant services of the train are closed between Haparanda and Oulu. This is due to differences in food and alcohol regulations between the two countries.
On trains bound for Sweden, the dining car closes its doors in Oulu. There are also no on-board sales via the app between Oulu and Haparanda.
Similarly, dining services are closed until Oulu on trains departing from Haparanda. The dining car and on-board sales will reopen in Oulu as the journey continues.
Are you travelling in the Ekstra Relaxed class?
Hot beverages and bottled water, normally available from the restaurant car, are included with your Ekstra Relaxed class ticket. Since restaurant services are closed on the section between Haaparanta and Oulu, when travelling in Ekstra Rento, you can pick up the hot beverages included in your ticket from the Ekstra Calm class.
Train schedules are always listed in local time on sales channels and tickets. There is a one-hour time difference between Sweden and Finland.
For example, on your ticket, the departure time from Haparanda is shown in Swedish time, and the stop at the next station, Tornio Centre, is shown in Finnish time. The 8-minute journey between the stations appears in the schedule as a difference of 1 hour and 8 minutes.

On trains 37 and 38, the train number changes when the train arrives in Oulu. The journey continues on the same train, so there is no need to change trains. However, be sure to check your seat number, as your seat may have changed for the remainder of the trip.
