Track damage causes long distance cancellations Tuesday 13 February

Long-distance train services will be cancelled on Tuesday 13.2. for safety reasons and on Traficom's recommendation. HSL's services and VR commuter train services will run as normal.

For safety reasons, VR is cancelling long-distance train services on Tuesday 13 February due to track damage. The track damage was discovered on Monday 12 February and is currently being repaired together with the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency. HSL (A, E, I, K, L, P, U, and Y trains) and VR commuter services (R, G, Z, O, M, H, T, and D trains) will run as normal - the problem has been isolated to the area and the fleet used in the area.

On Monday, 12 February, notches caused by track damage were found in the wheels of both VR's fleet and fleet owned by other parties. An inspection of the railway network and VR's fleet was started immediately, but Monday's strike has significantly slowed down the process of resolving the situation. For safety reasons, we have had to cancel long-distance train services on Tuesday in order to check the condition of the fleet and track. HSL and VR commuter services will run as normal, freight traffic will be able to run at lower speeds.

We will automatically refund the price of long-distance single tickets to our customers within approximately one week. We will also refund seat reservations for multi-tickets to customers and extend the validity of season tickets and multi-tickets for long-distance services by one day. These do not require any action on the part of ticket holders.

It is not possible to make an automatic refund for tickets purchased for night trains. For tickets purchased on night trains, you can apply for a refund through the compensation form, Opens in a new tab.

If you have bought paper tickets without logging in, for example at a ticket machine or R-kiosk, it is not possible to make a refund automatically. In these cases, you can apply for a refund through the compensation form, Opens in a new tab.

– We apologise for the inconvenience caused to passengers by the cancellation of long-distance services - this decision has been taken for safety reasons. We are working continuously with the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency to locate the malfunction and get the traffic running safely as soon as possible, says Piia Tyynilä, Director of Long Distance Traffic.

We will inform our customers about the traffic restoration as soon as possible on Tuesday 13 February.
