You get a 30 % student discount when travelling on long-distance trains on Basic tickets as well as 10 and 30 journey multi-tickets.
You get a 50% student discount when travelling on commuter trains in commuter train services area on single tickets and 10 journey multi-tickets.
To get a student card you must fulfil the following criteria:
- You are a full-time student and without pay at a university, college, polytechnic, vocational institution or high school and are not an official on permanent appointment or in a comparable employment relationship
- You are studying a basic degree and have not completed a master's degree
- The duration of your studies is at least eight months of uninterrupted study
- The educational institution is under public supervision
- the studies are not conducted under an apprenticeship contract or part of labour office careers guidance or company personnel training
- Over 60% of the total study time must be contact teaching for students engaged in distance, blended, or some sort of multiform education.
When tickets are inspected onboard the train you need a student card approved by VR. In addition to the traditional card, you can now also use a digital student card to prove your eligibility for the student discount. You can also use a temporary certificate of student status for discount on VR trains (valid 3 months) if you have not received your student card yet. If you do not have a student card or a certificate from the education institution, the conductor will sell you a new ticket onboard the train.
A minimum charge of €2.60 is collected on commuter trains. Student discount is not valid after 11 PM, but previously purchased tickets are valid. A student discount is also not granted on season tickets, pet or bicycle charges, sleeping car tickets or car-carrier tickets.
Long-distance fares depend on the type of ticket and time of purchase. Please note that terms of cancellation and other terms vary according to the type of ticket you choose.
It's a good idea to get the student card right at the start of the semester:
With the fall 2018 student sticker you can travel until 31 January 2019.
With the 2018–2019 student sticker you can travel until 30 September 2019.
Foreign nationals studying in Finland are entitled to a student discount provided that they are eligible for the student discount.
Exchange students studying in Finland have the right to a student discount,
- if they study at a Finnish educational institution within the discount system
- even if the studies last less than 8 months
Students must present a Finnish student association card approved by VR on-board the train.

Frequently asked questions
Pensioners or students do not get a discount in CarTrain package tickets. The CarTrain package is a fairly cheap product on which additional discounts are not granted.
As a student, you should be able to indicate your right to a student discount by showing, in connection with ticket inspection on the train, a VR-approved student card or certificate from your educational institution if you have not yet received a student card issued by the student organisation. Combined sale of student cards by VR and Matkahuolto will end on 1 June 2016. A previously purchased card will continue to be valid on the train in accordance with the period of validity label.
Get student discount on trains with a temporary certificate
You can prove your eligibility for a student discount on VR’s trains with a temporary certificate until you receive your actual student card. The temporary certificate must be printed out and filled in appropriately. You also need the stamp from your education institution on the certificate.
A temporary certificate is valid for 3 months from the date of the stamp given by the education institution. You will also find the certificate in the Wilma system of education institutions.

VR commuter services use two pricing systems. Ticket prices are determined by whether transport occurs in the Helsinki Metropolitan (HSL) area or in the commuter train services area operated by VR.
