Sleeping berths

The night trains are a comfortable option to travel overnight through the entire country. The night trains supply seats in their day cars and berths in their sleeping-cars. The night trains are composed of sleeping-cars, day cars, a restaurant car and possibly car-carrier wagons.

New 1st and 2nd class sleeping cars meeting the highest standards were put into service on the Tolstoi overnight express between Helsinki and Moscow at the start of June 2014. The train also has a comfortable business class. 

New double-deck sleeping-cars

The new sleeping-cars are designed to meet the needs of as many passenger categories as possible. The cars have a wide variety of services for all types of passengers:

  • Double compartments, also available as single compartments.
  • Some lower-deck compartments are interconnectible so as to serve families or groups of passengers.
  • The upper level compartments have a toilet and shower, while the middle deck and lower level passengers have to share one toilet and shower on the mezzanine floor
  • The lower level features facilities for the disabled and a same level access from the station platforms.
  • The car is air-conditioned and each compartment its own control panel.
  • Mobile phone signal amplifier, audio and video system, wake-up system.
  • The common premises of the car have 6 info monitors showing a video on the services provided aboard. The sleeping-cars and sleeping-compartments also have passenger address loudspeakers.


The sleeping-cars are non-smoking.

Allergic passengers are welcome to all compartments of the car. In the car end opposite to the accompanying pet compartment, there is a compartment specially designed for allergic passengers.

Upper deck

The upper level of the sleeping-car has 8 double compartments with toilet and shower. Luggage may be kept under the berths and in the end compartments (sleeping berths 201/202 and 215/216), in a separate luggage niche. The end compartments also provide ski fixing straps.

Lower deck

The lower level of the sleeping-car has 11 double compartments with the one closest to the entrance being a compartment for the disabled. Some of the compartments are interconnectible. The compartments have a wash basin, while a shower and a toilet are located on the middle deck of the car. Luggage may be kept under the berths and in the end compartments (sleeping berths 101/102), in a separate luggage niche. The end compartments also provide ski fixing straps.

Blue night trains

VR also operates older blue sleeping-cars along with the new double-deck cars on night trains to Lapland. The blue sleeping cars have 11 sleeping compartments for 1-3 persons and one two person compartment. There are a total of 35 berths.
Berth size is190 x 84 cm, except berths 34 and 35 the size is 180 x 75 cm

Compartment amenities:

  • places for allergic passengers
  • Pet spaces, berths 1-3 and 34-35
  • key card locks
  • WC in both car ends
  • Luggage transportation in the cabin or in luggage car
  • wash basin, bathroom cabinet with soap and drinking water, towel

Tolstoi sleeping compartments

 

With the new 1st and 2nd class sleeping cars, travelling from Helsinki to Moscow on Tolstoi is a much more enjoyable experience.

The amenities in the compartments of the new cars include foldable tables with a wash basin. The toilet at the end of each car has a shower. The service level on the comfortable business class sleeping car is unchanged.

Business class sleeping-car VIP

Business class 4 compartments for one or two persons. Each compartment of the coach has individual air-conditioning, shower and WC. A compartment has one 110 cm wide lower berth and 80 cm wide upper berth.

Compartment amenities:

  • table, padded chair, TV, DVD
  • air-conditioning and temperature control as per compartment
  • in each compartment is WC and shower, underfloor heating
  • bath robes and bath towels in each compartment

Business class restaurant services:

  • Departing from Helsinki, the price of the ticket includes a small warm dinner of high quality with an extensive selection of drinks as well as a cold platter with items such as fruit, yoghurt, and a roll.
  • Departing from Moscow the price of the ticket includes a small warm breakfast before arrival in Helsinki.
  • Other meals are available for purchase in the restaurant car or from the attendant.

The coach has a bar. Luggage can be transported in the compartment. Pets are not allowed to travel in the business class.

1st class sleeping-car

Each car has 9 two person sleeping compartments. Compartment can be booked also for one person. The berths are wider than on the old cars (70 cm x 184 cm). Luggage can be stored in the compartment under the bed or in the upper storage box

Compartment amenities:

  • A foldable table with a wash basin and a waste bin
  • Coat rack, mirror, face towels, two sockets.
  • Two toilets and a shower at the other end of the car.
  • Information monitors in each end of the coach

First class restaurant services:

  • Departing from Helsinki, the price of the ticket includes a small warm dinner as well as a cold platter with items such as fruit, yoghurt, and a roll.
  • Departing from Moscow the price of the ticket includes a small warm breakfast before arrival in Helsinki.
  • Other meals are available for purchase in the restaurant car or from the attendant.

2nd class sleeping-car

Sleeping-cars have 32 berths in four person compartments (26 berths in the coach with compartment for the disabled). Two lower and 2 upper berths in each compartment. The berths are wider than on the old cars (70 cm x 184 cm). Luggage can be stored in the compartment under the bed or in the upper storage box

Compartment amenities:

  • A foldable table with a wash basin and a waste bin
  • Coat rack, mirror, face towels, two sockets.
  • Two toilets and a shower at the other end of the car.
  • Information monitors in each end of the coach

Second class restaurant services:

  • The price of the ticket includes a small cold snack platter.
  • Other meals are available for purchase in the restaurant car or from the attendant.

Each car also has a coach attendant who can deliver coffee or tea and small snacks for a fee. When travelling with a pet you have to book an entire compartment.

Frequently asked questions

I travel with my small child in a sleeping car and I'm afraid the child will fall from the berth. What do I do?

The lower (blue sleeping cars) or lower and middle berths (double decker sleeping cars) can be equipped with a safety net so that the child does not fall down from the berth. You can ask for a safety net when purchasing tickets from station ticket offices or by calling VR Customer Care, tel. 0600 41 900.

I would like to take my skis with me on a long-distance train. Is that possible?

It's easy to transport skis onboard trains. The location of transport varies by train type. You can transport skis by train free of charge except when the skis are transported in the luggage van in blue cars. When transporting skis, please make sure that the skis do not cause nuisance to other passengers.

How much earlier have I to buy a journey with a berth ticket in the Online shop?

When purchasing a berth ticket from the Online Shop there must be over one hour until the departure of the train from its original departure station. You can check the departure station by clicking on the train number on the Online Shop's Timetables and fares page.
