CarTrain packages

The CarTrain package includes the travel ticket and a sleeping berth for 1-6 persons and car transport. In addition, you can book a compartment for yourself or your group. CarTrain package prices vary according to the travel date.


You can also book a CarTrain package online in VR's Online Shop.

Purchase your tickets quickly when logged into Veturi. When you have registered as a Veturi member, your contact information and car details are stored to help you purchase tickets faster next time.

If you want to transport other motor vehicles such as a motorcycle or a snowmobile, please contact VR Customer Care.

How to buy

You can buy a CarTrain package online, at VR ticket offices, by phone from VR Customer Care, from travel agencies and VR sales agents/Matkahuolto service points (see more information)

How to pay

You can pay for CarTrain packages when booking with the VR Online Shop.

Tickets bought at other purchasing locations must be paid when making the reservation when

  • the booking is made less than 24 hours before the train's departure

  • In other cases the tickets must be paid within 24 hours of booking. If the reservation is not paid within the deadline the reservation will be cancelled.


The CarTrain package is valid for the date and train indicated on the ticket.


You can make changes to the CarTrain package at ticket offices at the latest seven days before the journey, the service charge is 10 % of the ticket price.

If you have purchased the ticket from VR Customer Care you can also make the changes by phone (the service charge is 10 % of the ticket price).


You can make cancellations to the CarTrain package at ticket offices at the latest seven days before the journey, the service charge is 10 % of the ticket price.

If you haven't paid for the ticket yet or you have purchased the ticket from VR Customer Care you can also cancel it by phone (the cancellation charge is 10 % of the ticket price).


CarTrain packages purchased in advance

If you buy a CarTrain package earlier than 60 days before the journey you will receive an order for confirmation on your journey. Change the order confirmation to a train ticket with seat booking before the journey.

To get your tickets:

  • Call VR Customer Care and the tickets will be sent to you as an e-ticket.

  • Collect the tickets at a ticket office.

  • You can also get tickets purchased from the VR Online Shop if you have made your purchase as a registered customer and were logged into the Online Shop. If you login to VR Online Shop again you can access the CarTrain package in your bookings. Select a booking from the list or search for it with the order number. Click on Send and select the desired delivery method from the delivery method page.

Frequently asked questions

Will there be changes in the night train and CarTrain tickets and prices?

According to customer surveys and feedback customers would like more competitive products and price level. Night and CarTrain tickets will also be reviewed on that basis.

How to include children in the CarTrain package when buying from Online Shop?

Children aged 10 and younger travel free of charge on night trains with a parent in the same sleeping compartment if a berth is not booked for the child. (Please note: one child with one adult per berth). Train tickets entitling a child to travel free of charge are available at ticket offices and by contacting VR Customer Care by phone. Children aged between 11 and 16 need a berth of their own when travelling in a sleeping car. When passengers are selected children are counted as adults.  

How much earlier can I buy a CarTrain package?

The Online Shop will notify you when the CarTrain package is available to your selected date. The Online Shop will also inform you if the new timetable has not yet been published. For the most popular night train seasons we will announce the date when the tickets are available in advance on and on Veturi-newsletters.

How do I purchase CarTrain packages from VR Online Shop?

Select the CarTrain packages tab in VR Online Shop's Journey Search. If you are travelling to or from Helsinki, please select Pasila or Pasila car station as the station. Select the number of passengers according to how many persons are travelling. The system first calculates the seat price for the selected route. Add berths or compartments and click on Update price. Check that any ski boxes are included in the height of the car you have entered.If there is more than 60 days before the trip you will receive an order confirmation. As a registered customer you can access the required train tickets in My information in the Online Shop when there is less than 60 days before the trip or in other cases please call VR Customer Care, tel. 0600 41 900. If you buy a CarTrain package less than 60 days before the trip you will receive the tickets when purchasing them. CarTrain package tickets are not sent to mobile phones.

Vehicle size

The maximum permissible width of the car is 2.20 m and between the outer perimeters of the car tyres 2 m. Ski box should be included in the height measurement. 

Max. vehicle length is 5,05m including possible hitch

Over-wide/heavy vans cannot be transported in the covered car-carrier wagon. For instance, the following models cannot be transported: Ford Transit (100 T300 and larger), Ford Tourneo Custom, Nissan Primastar, Opel Vivaro, Renault Trafic, VW Transporter (new chassis 7/2003 ->), VW Transporter Long, VW Transporter Caravelle, VW Transporter Multivan, Toyota Proace and Hyundai H1.

The loaded car must fit into the car-carrier wagon so that the driver is able to exit the car easily.
