Buy long-distance train tickets
Train tickets may be booked via VR Customer Care and paid and picked up in an R-kiosk or a ticket vending machine. Please note that ticket purchasing locations are ticket-specific. Check out where to buy on ticket information pages.
You can now buy your train tickets anywhere using VR Mobile at m.vr.fi. Access VR Mobile through a browser or download an application to your phone.
With VR Mobile you can easily search train timetables and buy long-distance tickets or commuter train tickets. The ticket is displayed in the app's My tickets folder immediately after the purchase.
VR Online shop
Buying tickets is fast and easy in the Online Shop. After searching for your preferred route on the right day of travel, the most suitable departures with their price information will be shown first in the search results.
The VR Online Shop always shows the lowest available ticket price. If desired, you may pay an optional 10 € Cancellation charge or book a seat in extra Class or the upper deck compartment on the new InterCity DuettoPlus restaurant car.
After the purchase you can select the best delivery method for the ticket, for example by e-mail or to your mobile phone. You can also pick up your ticket from a ticket machine or from a railway station ticket office.
VR station booking offices and ticket vending machines
Train tickets are on sale at 10 railway stations in different parts of the country. To check the station with booking offices, their open hours and services go to the Station information pages.
When a ticket is purchased from a station ticket office, the ticket will cost 1 € more than a ticket purchased through a self-service channel .
VR station booking offices accept cash payments, bank card payments, common Credit/Debit card payments, Visa Electron and Maestro card payments. Diners Club and Diners Club Discover cards are not accepted.
In the vending machines, you may purchase long-distance and commuter train tickets, pay and collect train tickets, sleeping-berth tickets and car-carrier tickets ordered by telephone, and print train tickets purchased via Internet.
Ticket vending machines accept payments by common credit cards and American Express cards.
VR Customer Care
You can now buy tickets also by calling VR Customer Care, tel. 0600 41 900 (1.99 €/answered call + local network charge). To buy tickets by phone you need a Credit/Debit card. The customer service agent will ask for your card details. The tickets will be sent too you by e-mail or to your mobile phone.
You can also book long-distance train tickets through VR Customer Care. Collect tickets from R-kiosks, ticket vending machines or VR station ticket offices.
You can buy the most popular tickets for domestic long-distance services at R-Kiosks. Reservations can also be made for special seats and spaces in connection with single tickets. These include hypoallergenic seats and pet, bicycle, and wheelchair spaces. Berths in sleeping cars or CarTrain packages cannot be bought at R-Kiosks.
When a ticket is purchased from R-kioski, the ticket will cost 1 € more than a ticket purchased through a self-service channel.
VR train long-distance train tickets may be paid and collected at an R-kiosk. The tickets are first to be booked at VR Customer Care, 0600 41 900 (price of call, 1.99 € + local network charge), and then picked up at an R-kiosk by producing a booking number. No commission is charged for tickets picked up at an R-kiosk. Check the closest R-kiosk and opening hours on R-kiosk web site.
VR sales agents
Long-distance train tickets can be bought also from travel agencies and other sales agents across Finland. You can call VR Customer Care to enquire about the sales point nearest to you, tel. 0600 41 900.
The following Matkahuolto service points also sell train tickets: Helsinki, Hyvinkää, Hämeenlinna, Iisalmi, Joensuu, Jyväskylä, Kajaani, Karhula, Kemi, Kokkola, Kouvola, Kuopio, Lahti, Lappeenranta, Mikkeli, Oulu, Pori, Porvoo, Rauma, Rovaniemi, Salo, Savonlinna, Seinäjoki, Tampere, Turku, Vaasa, Varkaus, and the following Matkahuolto agents: Alavus, Forssa, Harjavalta, Huittinen, Kankaanpää, Kauhajoki, Kuusamo, Lempäälä, Loimaa, Mäntsälä, Oulainen, Parkano, Pieksämäki, Pietarsaari, Raahe, Sastamala, Sodankylä, Suonenjoki, Tornio and Ylivieska.
Matkahuolto accepts payments in cash and all debit/credit cards. Tickets bought from VR or collected from R-Kioski cannot be changed or cancelled at Matkahuolto.
In long-distance trains you can buy tickets without a reserved seat. On full trains, tickets purchased from a conductor do not guarantee a seat. When a ticket is purchased on a train from a conductor, the ticket will cost 3 € more (for 0–76 km journeys) and 6 € more (for journeys over 76 km) than a ticket purchased through a self-service channel. A ticket for direct regional routes that is purchased from a conductor will cost 50 cents more than a ticket purchased through a self-service channel. The fee is charged for each passenger.
In cases where a child is travelling alone, a ticket can be purchased on the train for the same price as through a self-service channel. Visa Electron, Diners Club, Diners Club Discover, Maestro and similar cards cannot be used to pay for tickets.
You can now buy your train ticket for commuter railcars from the ticket machine on the train or in advance from many VR ticket purchasing locations.
You can purchase adult, student, pensioner and child basic tickets for Eco class. The ticket machine accepts cash or common Credit/Debit card payments, with the exception of Visa Electron.
You can now buy your train ticket for commuter railcars from the ticket machine on the train or in advance from many VR ticket purchasing locations. There are no longer conductors in each train. Multi-tickets must be stamped at the ticket machine.
