Ski, bicycle, and luggage transport fees

When you travel by train you can transport skis, bicycles, and other luggage with you in space reserved for those items. The spaces designed for their transportation as well as the transport prices differ as per train category.

Ski transport fees

Ski transports in long-distance services

In blue express trains and in regional trains

In night trains

in new sleeping-cars, under the bed, or in end compartments, as fastened on the wall with straps free of charge

When ski bags are carried in a luggage van, the transport price may be paid in a VR station booking office or to the on-board conductor.

In InterCity trains

coin (50 cent) locking ski racks in IC service car, for five pairs of skis and two snowboards. (Coin returned.)No advance reservations are accepted.

In Pendolino trains

In commuter trains skis may be transported as hand luggage free of charge.

In VR Journey search, the express trains and regional trains accepting bicycles for transportation are indicated by an accompanying luggage pictograph.

Bicycle transportation in Helsinki Metropolitan Area commuter trains

Bicycles and kickboards are accepted for transportation in commuter trains with the exception of rush-hours, i.e. Mo-Fr from 7.00 to 9.00 and from 15.00 to 18.00. The bicycle transport price is to be paid to the on-board conductor.

Trains carrying luggage are indicated by a suitcase pictograph in VR Journey search. The transport service price may be paid in advance in a VR station booking office or to the on-board conductor.

  • At destination station, the customer is responsible for picking up the luggage in the train.
  • Should the luggage fail to be picked up, it is taken to the end station of the train.

Canoes, kayaks, ski boxes, etc. carried as luggage

Canoes, kayaks, ski boxes and other big objects are exclusively accepted for transportation as luggage in trains with a luggage van disposing of the requisite space.

Pram transportation

Prams are carried free of charge both in long-distance trains and commuter trains.

  • In Pendolino trains as hand luggage.

In the commuter HSL area, a passenger with a max 6 years old child in a pram or carriage travels free of charge. Shoud the journey extend beyond the HSL area, a VR zone ticket has to be purchased for the entire journey. No separate charge is collected for the transportation of a pram or carriage.

If needed, the on-train personnel will be happy to help to lift the pram.
