School Ticket

According to an agreement between VR and Kela - The Social Insurance Institution of Finland - a student ,ay buy the following tickets at a discount with School Transport Subsidy

  • school ticket or
  • 30 day pass or 30 day connection pass to the commuter services area.

Prerequisites for buying School Transport Subsidy tickets

  • when buying the ticket you shall always present a filled-in purchase certificate which is validated by the educational establishment and is not modified in any way
  • you can buy a ticket for the period of validity of the purchase certificate. However, you may buy the first ticket at most two weeks before the first period of validity
  • you may buy a ticket at most as many times as stated on the purchase certificate and one ticket at a time
  • the purchase of the ticket is confirmed with a VR station booking office date stamp and the sales clerk's initials
  • you shall provide your complete identity code (if you do not have an identity code, Kela will provide you with a temporary one)
  • the trip from home to school shall be at least 10 km, i.e. the train journey included in the trip to school can be less than 10 km
  • the same instructions are applicable to pupils under the age of 17.

Kela reimburses the daily cost of the trip to school with School Transport Subsidy when the length and cost of the trip exceed the limits stated in the legislation on School Transport Subsidy.

The following groups of pupils who are permanent residents and studying in Finland are entitled to School Transport Subsidy

  • lukio (high school) and corresponding tuition
  • vocational schools
  • music schools and
  • pupils of other vocational basic education establishments
  • folk high schools.
