Seat reservation

• In Pendolino, InterCity and Express trains a ticket is always purchased for a specific day and train
• Regional train tickets are valid for 14 days and do not include seat reservation
• In night trains you can travel either in a day coach with an express train ticket or in a sleeping-car with a ticket whose price consists of a regional train ticket fare and a sleeping-berth charge.

Changing a ticket at a VR station booking office

Should you wish to travel by a train type other than the one for which your ticket has been purchased, you may change the ticket at a station booking office.

• If you have an unused train ticket for a train that has already left you must buy a new seat reservation supplement ticket
• If you have an open return ticket and you want to travel by a train of a more expensive type; you must pay the difference in price of the supplement ticket. Correspondingly if you want to use a train of a less expensive type, the price difference is refunded.

Serial ticket:

• If you have a 10+1 or 44 journey InterCity train multi ticket and you want to travel in a Pendolino, you must pay the price difference between the supplement tickets at a VR station booking office.
• If you have a 10+1 or 44 journey express/regional train multi ticket and you want to travel in an InterCity or Pendolino train you must pay the price of a supplement ticket at a VR station booking office.
• A refund is not paid for a multi-ticket if you choose to travel on a less expensive train type.

Change of ticket aboard the train

If you have an unused train ticket for a train that has already left the conductor will collect the following charge:

• Express train €5 train charge
• InterCity2 x €5 train charge
• Pendolino 3 x €5 train charge.

The train charge is also collected if you travel with an open ticket in a more expensive train type than you have a ticket for or with a multi-ticket purchased for a less expensive train type.
