Berths and sleeping compartments

Travel on night trains in a seat or in a sleeping compartment. The ticket sold for night trains is the Basic ticket and if you want you can travel in a sleeping compartment in a two or three person compartment or book the entire compartment (1, 2 or 3 persons) for you or your group.
The price of berths and sleeping compartments depends on the travel date and whether you travel in a double-deck or a single-deck sleeping car.

Night train departure locations in winter season 2013-2014

Some of the night trains in winter season 2013-2014 depart from Helsinki railway station and some from Pasila car-carrier station.

If the train departs from Pasila car-carrier station all passengers departing from Helsinki must board the train at Pasila car-carrier station. This also applies to passengers who do not transport a car but travel in a sleeping compartment or day car seat.

Children on night trains


Children aged 10 and younger travel free of charge on night trains with a parent in the same sleeping compartment if a berth is not booked for the child. Please note the following matters before departure:

• Tell the ticket office clerk that a child will be travelling when purchasing tickets so that a free of charge train ticket may be printed.
• Train tickets entitling a child to travel free of charge are available at ticket offices and by contacting VR Customer Care by phone.
• If you buy CarTrain packages or your night train tickets from VR Online Shop you may book free of charge tickets for children to the same sleeping compartment at the abovementioned sales points.
• Children under the age of 6 do not need train tickets.

How to buy
Buy tickets for a berth or compartment:
online, ticket offices, ticket vending machine, sales agents or by phone from VR Customer Care.
How to pay
Online and ticket vending machines: Tickets which include a berth or sleeping compartment are paid upon booking. Berth of sleeping compartment tickets bought at other purchasing locations must be paid within 24 hours of booking or when booking when the reservation is made less than 24 hours before the train's departure. If the reservation is not paid within the deadline the reservation is cancelled.
Validity
The Basic ticket which includes the berth or sleeping compartment is valid on the date and train indicated on the ticket.

Changes
You may change a Basic ticket which includes a berth or sleeping compartment before the train's departure or 24 hours after the train's departure at the latest. The charge for changing the ticket is €5 per change. The difference is not refunded when changing to a less expensive ticket.
If you have purchased the ticket from VR Customer Care you can make changes also by phone. A €5 cancellation charge for paid tickets is collected also in these cases.
Cancellations
You may cancel a Basic ticket which includes a berth or sleeping compartment at ticket offices before the train's departure. The cancellation charge €10. If you have not paid for the ticket yet or you have purchased the ticket from VR Customer Care you can make cancellations also by phone. A €10 cancellation charge for paid tickets is collected also in these cases.
Go to the Services page to see which stations have a ticket office; the stations are marked with a grey background in the drop-down menu. Please note! When your train departs please wait for the conductor to arrive in your sleeping compartment. This way you ensure that the reservation remains valid.
