Student discount and VR and Matkahuolto joint student card

It's a good idea to get the student card right at the start of the semester.

• With the 2012-2013 student sticker you can travel until 30 September 2013.
  
• With the spring 2013 student sticker you can travel until 30 September 2013.

Student discount

To get a student card you must fulfil the following criteria:

• you are a full-time student and without pay at a university, college, polytechnic, vocational institution or high school and are not an official on permanent appointment or are not in a comparable employment relationship
• you are studying a basic degree and have not completed a master's degree
• your studies' duration is at least eight months of uninterrupted study
• the educational institution is under public supervision
• the studies are not conducted under an apprenticeship contract or are not part of labour office careers guidance or company personnel training
• over 60% of the total study time of a multiform student must be contact teaching.

When tickets are inspected onboard the train you need a student card approved by VR. If you do not have a student card the conductor will collect an additional charge onboard the train.

Joint VR and Matkahuolto student card

You get a student discount with VR and Matkahuolto joint student card on bus and train services. The card is free of charge but you need an €8 semester or year sticker as proof of validity. Joint student cards and semester and year stickers are available at VR ticket offices and Matkahuolto service points.

• To get the certificate for the student card or sticker print the form by clicking on the link.
• You always need the educational institution's certification for the certificate. The certificate is valid for one month from the signature date.
• For the first student card you need one passport photo and an identity card
• The student card must have a valid year sticker which costs €8. You can buy the sticker from ticket offices.

Please note! A VR/Matkahuolto certificate does not entitle to a joint VR and Matkahuolto student card without the educational institution's certification!

Finnish students abroad

A student discount is also granted to Finnish students who study abroad and receive study grants in Finland for studies conducted abroad.

If you are a Finnish student studying abroad you can get a VR/Matkahuolto student card and a validity sticker by presenting the following documents at a VR ticket office:

• a student card from a foreign educational institution or certificate of studies
• a copy of the next payment of study grants which you can get from Kela customer service www.kela.fi or by phone +358 20 692 209.
• identity card and passport photo

Foreign students in Finland

Foreign nationals studying in Finland are entitled to a student discount provided that they are eligible for the student discount.
Exchange students studying in Finland have the right to a student discount,

• if they study at a Finnish educational institution within the discount system
• even if the studies last less than 8 months

Students must present a Finnish student association card approved by VR or a VR/Matkahuolto student card onboard the train.
