Travel Card and HSL Area

Helsinki, Espoo, Kauniainen, Vantaa, Kerava and Kirkkonummi together form an integrated regional transport area which uses a joint ticket system. Ticket price is determined according to the area of travel and passenger group.

With internal municipality tickets you can travel in one municipality. The regional ticket allows you to travel within the HSL Area (Helsinki, Espoo, Kauniainen, Vantaa) and a two zone regional ticket in Espoo, Kauniainen, Vantaa, Kerava and Kirkkonummi. A three zone regional Ticket enables you to travel in the entire HSL Area.

Validity of tickets

In commuter trains travelling within the HSL Area (Helsinki-Korso, Helsinki-Vantaankoski and Helsinki-Mankki), only HSL and city internal tickets are accepted. Should a journey within the HSL Area be made aboard a long-distance train, a corresponding ticket as per train type is needed.

When the journey extends beyond the HSL Area, a VR zone ticket is needed for the entire journey. For example, a journey from Tikkurila to Järvenpää covers two zones (B+C). Then a HSL Area ticket is not accepted as a partial ticket for the journey.

HSL Area night fare

If you travel in commuter trains within the HSL Area at night between 02.00 and 04.30 (Mon-Sun), a one-way night fare is collected. The HSL night fare may be paid either to the conductor on the train or by the Travel card in the reader.
