VR Train tickets
Tickets are cheaper on less popular services than on the more popular ones and passengers entitled to discount tickets get a bigger discount.

Long-distance tickets
There are a number of ticket types for long-distance trains for all travel requirements. Buy tickets from VR Mobile, online, from VR ticket offices, ticket machines, by calling VR Customer Care and from resellers.Plan your train trip well in advance. The Advance ticket is a good choice: the earlier you buy, the less you pay.
Advance tickets are sold 60-7 days before departure only from VR Online Shop. The train ticket is valid on the date and train indicated on the ticket. Advance tickets are available for all routes for most train services and permit travel in Eco Class with seat booking.

Basic tickets are normal price tickets used in Eco Class. Basic tickets are valid on the date and train indicated on the ticket. It is possible to change the departure date and time indicated on the ticket by paying a fee. Certain passenger groups are granted a discount on Basic ticket fares.

Buy a Flexible ticket and travel in comfort in Extra Class with seat booking. Extra Class services include e.g. daily newspapers, coffee/tea and snacks and a spacious seating arrangement.
It is possible to change the departure date and time indicated on the ticket or cancel the ticket by paying a cancellation fee.
Certain passenger groups are granted a discount on Flexible ticket fares.

Other long-distance train tickets are e.g. the family ticket which allows one child to travel free of charge with seat booking when accompanied by an adult and group tickets and multi and season tickets for frequent travellers. If you travel on a night train you can book either only a berth or a CarTrain package which includes berth and car transport booking.

Commuter tickets
VR commuter services uses two pricing systems. The fares depend on whether the trip is made inside or outside HSL area (Helsinki region). You can now purchase commuter services zone area single tickets through VR Mobile.
When the entire commuter train trip or part of it is made outside Helsinki region municipalities you must purchase a VR zone ticket.
VR zone tickets are sold as single tickets, 10 journey multi-tickets and season tickets for 14-365 days. A discount is granted on commuter tickets to juniors, students and pensioners.

Helsinki, Espoo, Kauniainen, Vantaa, Kerava and Kirkkonummi form a joint public transport area with a joint ticket system. The fare depends on the travel area and ticket type.
